Iron Planet Hobbies, a specialty ecommerce store catering to model railroad enthusiasts, sought our expertise to improve their website’s functionality and user experience while also enhancing their email marketing strategy. While the website was already built on BigCommerce, our goal was to refine its usability, streamline navigation, resolve checkout issues, and optimize the shopping experience. Additionally, we implemented a robust email marketing system to engage customers, boost conversions, and drive repeat purchases.

Problem
Iron Planet Hobbies started as a passion project when the founder discovered a niche product that wasn’t readily available in the U.S. This passion soon evolved into a full-fledged business, initially operating from home before moving to its commercial location. However, despite the company’s growth, the website faced several functional issues that hindered its full potential. Customers encountered difficulties with navigation, checkout processes, and product visibility, which impacted sales and user satisfaction. Additionally, email marketing efforts were inconsistent, with no automated email flows, limited segmentation, and a lack of structured campaigns to re-engage customers, combined with an inefficient email marketing platform, our team needs to come up with a comprehensive plan to improve email marketing performance.

Solution
Utilizing BigCommerce’s flexibility we integrated third-party scripts to enhance Iron Planet Hobbies’ shopping experience with improved design, navigation, and functionality. We optimized the navigation menu with a sticky brand view and logo additions for seamless browsing. We added a list view with “Add to Cart” buttons, and updated the home page with a dynamic carousel, and refined header for better aesthetics and usability. Checkout issues, including payment failures and incorrect shipping rates, were resolved with rule refinements and pop-up alerts.
Leveraging Klaviyo, we created a strategy around delivering relevant information at the right time to their loyal customer base. We launched automated flows, segmented email campaigns, and well-timed pre-orders notifications, fostering engagement and boosting sales.
Web Development
We leveraged the tools and flexibility of BigCommerce to enhance the shopping experience by enabling seamless integration with third-party scripts. This allowed us to implement key improvements in the website’s design, navigation, and functionality.


Visibility of Categories
Previously, when customers selected a brand, they couldn’t easily switch to another without leaving the page. We introduced a sticky view displaying all available brands, allowing users to seamlessly select different manufacturers without disrupting their browsing experience. Additionally, we enhanced category visibility by adding brand logos, making it easier for customers to browse products by manufacturer.

Quick Add with List View
To improve shopping experience, we implemented a list view feature with an “Add to Cart” button and quantity selector. This allowed customers to add multiple items to their cart directly from category pages, streamlining the purchasing process, particularly for repeat customers familiar with specific products.

Homepage and Header Changes
We updated the homepage by replacing the Build Your Model Railroad section with a dynamic rotating carousel to highlight promotions and featured products. The header was redesigned with a repositioned logo, adjusted colors, and a larger search bar for better visibility. These updates improved the overall aesthetics and usability of the site.

Resolving Checkout Issues
Customers faced multiple issues during checkout, including payment failures and incorrect shipping rates. Some shoppers experienced PayPal checkout errors, where the system would freeze during payment processing. We resolved these problems by refining checkout rules, adding pop-up alerts for missing information, and ensuring major credit cards were properly integrated. Additionally, we fixed a pricing display issue where default prices appeared instead of sale prices in the order details page.

Cart2Cart Order Migration
To facilitate the smooth migration of orders, customers, reviews, and products, we utilized the Cart2Cart migration tool. This ensured that historical data was transferred seamlessly without disrupting ongoing operations.

Email & SMS Marketing
Prior to our involvement, Iron Planet Hobbies had limited email marketing efforts, with no automated campaigns and only sporadic promotional emails. We implemented a structured email marketing strategy using Klaviyo to nurture customer relationships and drive sales.

Automation and Segmentation
We built automated email flows, including welcome emails, abandoned cart reminders, post-purchase follow-ups, and back-in-stock notifications. These helped re-engage customers, reduce lost sales, and provide timely updates on product availability. The subscriber list was also segmented based on customer behavior, purchase history, and location to ensure more targeted and relevant messaging.

Promotional Campaigns and Seasonal Outreach
Given that 25% of their business comes from pre-orders, we developed a pre-order email sequence consisting of an announcement, a reminder to pre-order before the deadline, and a final last call email when products arrived. Additionally, we created holiday promotions for key sales periods, including Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and Christmas.

Design & Content Optimization
We designed professional email templates for product launches, featured products, and educational content (e.g., “How-To” guides for beginners). Since the brand prides itself on customer service and expertise, emails were crafted with an informative, approachable tone and meant to address their target market: model railroad enthusiasts.
To help grow the brand’s subscriber base, we created a dedicated landing page to capture visitors’ phone numbers and email addresses.
Other Integrations
We configured shipping rules in ShipperHQ, ensuring multiple shipping options and transparent costs at checkout. International orders were charged at actual cost. Additionally, we fixed the ‘Shop Now’ and ‘Shop by Manufacturer’ buttons on the homepage for proper functionality.
We integrated the lateshipment.com app on the BigCommerce website to improve shipping and order delivery experiences, as well as boost engagement, revenue, and retention.

The improvements in navigation, checkout process, and product visibility helped with enhancing user experience. The enhancements to Iron Planet Hobbies’ website created a smoother and more intuitive shopping experience. Improved category navigation made it easier for customers to browse products, while the quick-add list view streamlined purchasing multiple items or higher quantities. The homepage and header redesign gave the website a more polished look, and checkout fixes eliminated payment and shipping issues, reducing cart abandonment.
By leveraging automation and targeted campaigns, email marketing became a powerful revenue driver for Iron Planet Hobbies. The client saw 47% of its revenue come from campaigns and 53% from flows.
Within the first three months of our partnership, our email marketing efforts reached 135,405 recipients, achieving a 44.1% open rate and a 6% click rate. Additionally, the brand saw a 1,249.3% ROI from its email marketing campaigns. Since we implemented the landing page, the brand’s list growth has increased by 26%.
